“Neither am I.”
Light chuckle.
That was my professor’s opening line in our first class this morning.
Followed by the announcement, “the syllabus on the course website is not up-to-date,” in her extremely soft-spoken voice. (Nothing thrills me more than a quiet lecturer.)
Followed by the question, “Are there any first-years in here?”
My hand was the only one raised in response.
The professor then tried to be wisdom-y or something: “You’re at an advantage and disadvantage. The disadvantage is that the second-years know things that you don’t. And the advantage is that you’ll get to learn from them.” As in I will be benefitting because I have the opportunity to learn from the oh-so-sage second-years.
Um, really? Thanks for that announcement to the class. But let’s get this straight. The second-years don’t know more than I do. They were stupid enough to have walked into this class just like I did. They are as dumb as I am.
Needless to say, the class was not good. So I did what anyone with manners and maturity would do. I promptly and discreetly left the class of 9 (formerly including me) students at break-time.
